Knuckles the Echidna made his debut in Sonic 3 for the Megadrive/Genesis system on its release on February 2, 1994. He is the Guardian of the Master Emerald found on Angel Island and, excluding Eggman/Robotnik's robots, was Sonic's first rival. Recent games tend to have them working together and have toned down some of the rivalry aspect.He is known for being a loner as well as a stubborn and fierce fighter, yet a bit gullible. His main skills focus on his strength, gliding, climbing, digging, and swimming. After the move to 3D games, Knuckles has also acquired an innate ability to sense shards of the Master Emerald while seemingly losing the "Super" and "Hyper" forms granted to him in the Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles games. Knuckles is usually given either earth-related or fire-related moves as far as elements are concerned.
